What you should know before filing ANY claim
Most of us know that being "claims free" could yield a healthy discount on our insurance, but did you know that even a "claim inquiry" can count as a claim?
That's right, even if there is $0 paid out by the insurance company, you could still loose your "claims free" discount - and have a claim on your insurance record for up to 5 years. For that reason, it's a good idea to seek the advice of a professional in your area to determine whether or not to file a claim.
For example, let's say there's a windstorm and you discover resulting damage to your roof. Your first course of action (besides taking appropriate steps to prevent further damage) should be to seek the opinion(s) of roofing contractors as to the extent of the damage. If you don't know who to contact, we can point you in the right direction. Taking photos is also a great idea.
Based on this information, you should then contact your Agent and determine if making a claim is reasonable with consideration to your deductible and coverage.
